TURU
FUTURE ANCESTORS is an ongoing avant-garde Afrofuturistic visual art and costume project that seeks to explore and visualize the future inspired by African cultures, traditions, and aesthetics strut by everyday local people.
The body of work imagines a world where the wisdom of indigenous traditions and the advancements of modern technology coexist in harmony. It draws on various aspects of African culture including fashion, architecture, mythology,social practices and projects them into a speculative future.
This creative endeavor showcases how the unique styles and dressing of indigenous tribes can evolve into future fashion, offering a new perspective on cultural continuity and evolution challenging the often dystopian views of the future, portraying a vision of hope, resilience and celebrate people with African ancestry.
Through this fusion with a focus on Kenyan people of TURKANA | TURU – aims to celebrate, empower and provide a reference point for understanding our heritage while projecting it into a speculative future, connecting culture, education, economies, and identity.
NOTE; The artist Kevo Abbra draws inspiration from various cultural traditions, incorporating motifs, patterns, and symbols that reflect the rich tapestry of the community’s heritage. These traditional elements will be reinterpreted through modern art techniques and fashion design, creating a dialogue between the past, present and the future.
